Head of Oceanus

  The mosaic shows a section of the triple border which surrounds the great floor mosaic and consists of an acanthus scrool framed by a band of twisted ribbon and other bands on either side.The head of Oceanus is made of unusual small tesserae. The eye is a single black tessera surrounded by rows of dark red and an outline row of black. The eyelashes and eyebrows are black .The nose is thin and straight, and the curves of both nosestrils are carefully outlined. Both cheeks are highlighted in yellow and shaded with alternating lines of red and green. The lips are worked in red, with a dark brown line between them. The moustache is emerald green. Despite moustache, the overall impression of the head is naturalistic. Oceanus heads belong to an old-established classical reportory and are often encountered in Late Roman and Early Christian art.
